Journey to England/Yorkshire

view from the garden

In the 24 years of running the courses at Middlesmoor my aim has been to teach the children clearly and in an enjoyable manner and above all to make the 3 weeks in England a happy and memorable experience.
So the best introduction to our courses is really given by the
comments that the pupils have sent us.
A child on a summer course has already had a year’s normal school. The situation that they find in a foreign country must be friendly and organised around their larger entertainment. This is rarely the case if they go to a family which has its own life  and where the foreign child has sometimes more company from the television than from people able or willing to talk simple English.
The children in Middlesmoor appreciate:

  • The whole house and its daily existence is centred on their needs
  • The clear, useful and entertainng lessons. (we have published a Grammar book for Italian schools.)
  • The connecting support system of extra English practice that is given by:
  • Preparation and acting of theatre pieces
  • Learning of chosen pop songs from our compilation “Middlesmoor Rocks” to perform.
  • Money prize system (stars) for those who make a real effort to use their English with the helpers.
  • Living together as a large family (see pupil comments)
  • The beauty of the surrounding countryside

Camping near Hadrian's wall
  • The 3 day camping trip, sometimes as far as the sea
  • The 3 day London trip
  • The sport activities
  • The friendly relationship with teachers and helpers
  • The lack of petty regulations (other than having to be quiet after 11.00!)
  • The food! It is not basic English! (a large number of pupils wouldn’t come back 4 or 5 times if it wasn’t good).
