Afternoon activity, sports, excursions art activities and camping
 
Below are listed some afternoon and evening activities: sport, art, excursions, cooking; during the following activities students actively use the English they have learnt during the lessons: theatre, singing / music. All artistic materials are provided.

When the weather is suitable, each group has a camping trip; usually to Scarborough (the magnificent and almost empty beach of Cayton Bay) or other places on the North Sea.

Activities

Sport
+ Use of our heated swimming pool
+ Walks up the river and swimming in its pools
+ For anyone who can ride, there is the possibility of riding at a nearby stables (not included in the course fee)
+ In fine weather we sometimes sleep on the moor under the stars with sleeping bags
+ Some afternoons we help the farmer with haymaking or sheep shearing
+ Treasure hunt in the woods below the house
+ Tennis / squash at Pateley Bridge secondary school – where rackets can be hired
+ Football on the field at Pateley Bridge

Visits
+ Visits to castles, abbeys, museums
+ Visits to Harrogate, Leeds and/or York
+ Excursions to local agricultural fairs
+ Visits to the large swimming pool at Harrogate
+ Rowing on the river at Knaresborough


Artistic
+ Preparing to act for the DVD film: either a grammar play or a scene from Shakespeare for advanced students
+ Pottery fired in our kiln
+ Drawings of the village as preparation for making intaglio prints (we have an etching press)
+ Outdoor oil painting using our materials

In The House
+ Use of our piano – for those who can play!
+ Memorising and preparing a dance to accompany a chosen song from “Middlesmoor Rocks”
+ On rainy afternoons, cooking & baking together
+ Use of our billiard table and table tennis
+ Invention and acting of student made plays
+ Songs, traditional and pop songs
+ Watching specially selected English film DVDs
